Steps toward dental assisting in Florida

  1. 1

    Understand Florida's separate requirements

The Board's radiographer application says it does not issue dental assistant licenses. Radiography and certain expanded duties still require specific formal training and the proper dentist supervision.

  2. 2

    Match the program approval

Find the provider on the Board's expanded-duty/radiology list. Match the street address to the campus you will attend before paying a deposit.

  3. 3

    Complete the school's admission checks

FSCJ's July 2026 packet requires transcripts and a competitive admission review. Accepted students complete drug and background screening, followed by the required physical and immunization documentation.

  4. 4

    Finish practical and clinical work

Reserve time for clinical work as well as scheduled classes. FIDA's diploma includes a 160-hour externship under a licensed dentist, alongside theory and laboratory instruction.

  5. 5

    Document your radiography training

The Board application describes formal-training routes and a separate radiographer certification route involving three months of supervised on-the-job training followed by an approved course within 12 months. Ask which route applies to your course before performing x-ray duties.

  6. 6

    Check national exam eligibility

FSCJ's dental assisting information says graduates can earn DANB's Certified Dental Assistant credential by passing its examinations. Ask each school to document your eligibility for the full CDA credential and identify any separate examination fees.

Jacksonville dental assistant jobs and median pay

The BLS May 2025 Jacksonville, FL metro estimates counted 1,850 dental assistant jobs (SOC 31-9091). Median pay was $24.17 per hour and $50,270 per year. This regional measure includes workers with different experience levels, duties and employers.

BLS describes OEWS as a survey of wage and salary employment that excludes self-employed workers. Its employment estimate measures existing jobs, rather than vacancies you can apply for. The median marks the middle of the wage distribution. When you review a job offer, compare the stated hourly rate, benefits and weekly schedule with your own training and commuting costs.

Dental assisting costs and help with tuition

FSCJ's July 2026 packet lists resident tuition and fees of $1,470, $1,368 and $735 across three terms, plus a separate technology fee and optional exams. FIDA publishes $9,700 tuition plus $150 registration. Concorde's catalog, effective December 3, 2025, lists $19,712 tuition and $20,952 total. Get a written breakdown before comparing prices.

FSCJ labels its certificate financial-aid eligible. Its aid catalog explains FAFSA and need-based Pell Grants. Contact CareerSource Northeast Florida, the local American Job Center network, about WIOA assistance for approved training. Awards depend on eligibility and available funds. Veterans should verify the exact school and course before using GI Bill benefits for non-college training. FIDA also publishes installment plans; compare financing terms with the cash price.

What to ask a dental assistant school

  • Does this exact campus appear on the current Board training list?
  • What proof of expanded-functions and dental radiography training will I receive?
  • Does your course qualify me for full CDA testing or specific DANB components?
  • Where will I complete clinical practice, and who arranges the site?
  • Are daytime externship hours required even if I attend evening classes?
  • Which books, uniforms, screenings, technology fees and exams cost extra?
  • What are the admission deadline, next start and written refund terms?

How to check a school

Common questions

Do I need a Florida dental assistant license?

The Florida Board of Dentistry's application instructions say the Board does not issue dental assistant licenses. That does not remove the training rules for certain duties. Dental radiography and expanded functions have their own education and supervision requirements. Keep your course certificates and ask the supervising dentist which tasks your documented training allows.

How long is dental assistant school in Jacksonville?

Concorde's Jacksonville diploma lists nine months. FIDA publishes a six-month program with 378 clock hours, including an externship. Calendar length does not show how many days you must attend each week. Review the campus schedule and clinical hours together so you can plan transportation, work and child care.

Is a radiography certificate the same as the CDA?

No. The Florida Board describes state dental radiographer certification. FSCJ's admissions packet explains that passing DANB's General Chairside Assisting, Infection Control, and Radiation Health and Safety examinations earns the national CDA designation. Ask a school to identify every credential included in tuition and any separate exams or applications you would need.

Can I take dental assisting classes after work?

FIDA lists a November 9, 2026 start with Monday and Wednesday classes from 5 to 9:30 p.m. Concorde's calendar also lists evening dental assistant cohorts. Ask separately about clinical availability, since the classroom schedule does not establish when an office can supervise your practical work. Request the full calendar before arranging work or child care.

Can a short course cover expanded functions?

Florida has a separate approval process for expanded-duty courses. The Board's program guidance requires a syllabus and competency testing before approval. That approval concerns specific duties, so ask what the course covers, whether you need prior dental assisting experience, and which certificate documents completion. It does not by itself establish national CDA exam eligibility.
